Sporty and active travellers can save their travel budget for something pretty by swapping their skills and muscle for food, accommodation and equipment hire. The four hosts below each offer the opportunity to get onto lakes, mountain trails or river rapids without having to spend a cent.

Whitewater rafting in the mountains of Canada
Accept this invite to spend some time in the Canadian Rockies and you will soon find yourself cleaning, driving vehicles, washing wetsuits, prepping food, or doing one of the many other slightly boring jobs in the whitewater rafting business. On the upside is the opportunity to go on a couple of rafting trips each week, or do some hiking, camping or kayaking.

A sporty stay on Lake Naussac in the south of France
This family business runs activities, including a sailing school, mountain bike rental, kayaking and catamaraning, on Lake Naussac, one of the largest artificial lakes in the south of France. They need help maintaining the bikes and boats and also someone to assist the chef and serve in the restaurant.

If you have worked at recreation community centres, summer camps, au paired, taught swimming lessons or mentored youth then you will be the perfect fit for this Chinese summer camp. The camp is open in July and August and in the winter, in January and February.

Need help with activities in Turkey
This travel agency on the Mediterranean coast organise trekking and walking along the Lycian Way, along with activities including canoeing, horse riding and quad biking. They want help with the activities and tours and could particularly do with a really good horse riding guide. In the winter they accept volunteers on their organic farm.
