Review: Spanish-English Gastronomic Dictionary

Everyone has a fear when they travel. For some the fear can manifest itself at the beginning and end of the trip when they board the plane while others (like me) are reduced in revulsion at the sight of a cockroach crawling up out of a squat toilet.

Spanish-English Gastronomic DictionaryI don’t like wasps much either. They are nasty and unnecessary.  That is pretty much the limit of the things I’m bothered by that other people would be fine with but for Deirdre it would be quicker to list the things that don’t scare her.

Review: The Gap-Year Guidebook 2012

I always enjoy holding a brand new book in my hands. Second hand and electronic versions do not bring the same tactile sensation that comes with handling a new book, so it was a pleasure to be sent a copy of The Gap-Year Guidebook 2012.

The Gap Year Guidebook 2012Within its covers lies 448 pages of suggestions, advice and information for the adventures and CV enhancing courses that could be taken this year. Randomly opening a page leads to ideas as diverse as turtle conservation projects in Sri Lanka, learning music theatre production in Australia or short college tractor driving tuition in the UK.

iPhone App Review: Watch Television Abroad with FilmOn TV & TV Guide

Though I don’t watch a great deal of television – preferring the radio – there are a few programmes from Britain that I would watch given the chance. Living in Turkey that chance doesn’t present itself too often.

Though most American shows can be caught after a few days on internet sites such as Sidereel British shows are harder or impossible to find. The BBC is present in Turkey through its BBC Entertainment service on DigiTurk which is fine if you like to watch average comedies from a couple of years ago or EastEnders a few weeks behind its airing in the UK.

Caves, Chimneys and Stone Houses in Cappadocia

As poor travel editors our budget usually buys us a night in a charmless room in a central part of town but recently we took advantage of our website and traded some of our advertising space to stay in accommodation that were worth enjoying in their own right.

The Cappadocia region of Turkey offers an array of hotel options where competition drives hoteliers to compete on style, uniqueness and ambience rather than on price alone. We took the opportunity to compare three different cave hotels in the region, one in Avanos and two in Goreme.

A Place to Stay in Jordan

We got to see the tourism industry from the other side of the hotel fence during our time in Jordan. All rooms are twins or doubles with bathroom unless otherwise stated.

Al-Amer Hotel. Aqaba
Raghadan St. Tel: +962 (03) 201 4821
Our first home in Jordan, the Al-Amer provided the first suggestion accommodation in Jordan wasn’t going to be the bargain it can be in Egypt. Though we negotiated the rate down from JD24 to JD18 we still thought this a little expensive but, with more experience of Jordanian prices, now consider this price quite reasonable. The standard shape and size of many hotel rooms found the world over, we had a large bed, a fridge and TV (no English language channels though). Looking down over the balcony we could see some of the good food options the street offered.

Teaching English AbroadBut Susan Griffith’s guides are usually much more than the sum of their facts and contacts and Teaching English Abroad is no exception in not relying solely on information gained from the industry. Much of the content comes from the perceptions of traveller teachers on the ground.
