Photos of People Taking Photos of… the Petronas Twin Towers

Whereas the perhaps slightly excessive abundance of national flags flown almost everywhere around central Kuala Lumpur could be seen as a reflection of political insecurity, the Petronas Twin Towers are a symbol of Malaysia’s growing economic self-confidence since independence.

The towers are the Pole Star of Kuala Lumpur. Peering above and peeking between the city’s lower slung buildings – often juxtaposed with the bulbous tip of the Skytower – they are a constant reminder of one’s location on a journey around the city.

Though they didn’t start out as our destination that day we were drawn to the slowly brightening towers one evening. By the time we got there they were closed but outside the waters of the artificial lake were about to be illuminated with a light show. As people began snapping away on their cameras and phones we snapped away at them:
