With summertime on the way in Australia, it’s the perfect time to get your pale complexions out into the sunshine for an injection of vitamin D and enjoy the atmosphere of rooftop dining. Thankfully the locals in Perth love a good rooftop bar and there’s plenty around, but where are the ones with the best views and cheap eats?
Here’s a list of our top 3!
356 Murry Street
Perth, WA 6000
The breathtaking views across Perth’s city skyline will make the effort of climbing to The Conservatory Rooftop Bar well worth it. It’s an all-year-round affair with umbrellas for when it’s scorching hot, and heating to keep you comfortable well into the evening.
The menu is filled with an array of tasty barbeque treats as well as tapas and cheese platters, ideal for sharing. Small plates start at $8 with the most expensive large plate being a mouth-watering WA Angus Porterhouse at $24. To quench your thirst, be sure to try one of their tantalising cocktails like the popular Lemon Meringue featuring vanilla vodka and Galliano, vanilla syrup and finished off with pineapple and passionfruit juice.
Open Wednesday and Thursday 4:30am – 1am; Friday and Saturday 12pm – 3am; Sunday special events only.
100 St. Georges Terrace
Perth, W.A 6000
Tucked away in amongst Perth’s corporate concrete jungle is The Greenhouse, a bar you can’t miss thanks to the entire façade covered in terracotta pots. While the views aren’t epic, the city atmosphere and innovative food and drink menu make up for the lack of Instagram worthy landscape shots. As a bonus, it’s open from breakfast through to dinner!
Perch yourself on a hipster timber stool and enjoy a tasty meal of cola braised pork tacos, a buttermilk fried chicken burger, or a roast pumpkin salad. Prices start at $5 for nibbles to $18 for burgers. Vegetarians and vegans can rejoice as there are plenty of yummy goods, and most meals can be adjusted to suit dietary requirements.
Open Monday to Friday 7am onwards; Saturday 8am onwards
The Mechanics Institute
222 William St
Northbridge, W.A. 6003
With a reputation of being Australia’s best small bar in 2015, the Mechanics Institute has a lot to live up to. Let’s just say, you won’t be disappointed. The tiered rooftop bar has become Perth’s drinking institution, with an extensive cocktail and artisan wine list, as well as craft beers on tap.
We’ve heard you can’t go past their Epic Bloody Mary, which the Mechanics Institute describe it as being “rich, spicy and wonderfully Tabascoey”, but what about the food?
With Flipside Burgers located downstairs, there’s no reason for the rooftop bar to have a menu. Serving simple, hand-crafted burgers, order with the guys at Flipside and they’ll deliver them right up to the bar.
Open Monday to Saturday 12pm – midnight; Sunday 12pm to late
